The Truth About Street Begging That Will Change How You See Pakistan

According to Gallup Pakistan, nearly 374 million rupees circulate in street begging every day. That means Pakistanis donate over 136 billion rupees a year, almost half a billion US dollars, to beggars on streets, in markets and outside mosques. Around 110 million adults give money at least occasionally, and almost 19 million people donate daily, with an average donation of just 20 rupees. Street begging has effectively become a parallel economy. Half the country believes beggars are genuine, while the other half believes beggars operate under organized mafias.
